The Barataria Nature Preserve sits approximately 10 miles south of the city of New Orleans. The preserve is home to a remarkable 16 different ecosystems -- prominent among them the lowland ruderal forest, low-lying marshlands, swamp, and floatant. These types of ecosystems are in great danger due to saltwater intrusion and wetland destruction caused by 20th century dredging.
This visitor's center keeps in mind that we must tread lightly on such ecosystems. The entire building is supported on a tight structural grid made of dimensional lumber -- allowing its construction without having to bring heavy equipment into the swamp. Visually, the existing path weaves over and through the building to reduce the overall presence and allow the natural environment remain the main attraction.
