In the US, vehicle safety classifications allegedly aim to provide a safer driving experience for all who travel by car. What these regulations have overlooked, however, is the safety of those who happen to be outside of a car - or in other words, pedestrians. Vehicle safety regulations take many factors into account, such as safe driving technology, crumple zones, and vehicle size. Partly due to that last point, cars are experiencing what is called "size creep", where year after year, the cars slowly grow in size, making them safer for the drivers, but all the more deadly for pedestrians.
This sculpture is a commentary on the two sides of the word safety, as it relates to cars, and questions our motives over just whom we are trying to protect.
